  Decorating To Sell - Back
When you decide to sell your home you face an interesting dilemma. You have to put yourself into the shoes of a prospective buyer and realize that what looks fantastic to you may look terrible to the person walking through your home with a critical eye. First impressions can clinch the sale or cause the prospective buyer to turn away and buy something else.

Curb appeal is important, but it's what's inside that counts the most. Your goal should be to neutralize your home. Since you have no idea of your prospective buyer's taste in decorating, you've got to make your home agreeable to nearly any taste. That green shag carpet may not match the buyer's blue sofa and cause them to dismiss the house as a possibility.

Use white paint or some other soft neutral color on walls. Your job is to have your prospective buyer envision themselves in your home as they walk through it. Keep the color consistent throughout your home. Avoid the use strong colors or wallpaper. A little money spent here can make all the difference.

Part of "neutralizing" is cleaning. Have carpets professionally cleaned, and empty out as much clutter as possible. Organize the closets and empty the shelves. Excessive clutter makes the home look smaller and turns off prospective buyers. Clean tile floors and wax the vinyl floors. The patterns of your flooring may be out of date, but if you keep things clean and take pride in your home's presentation, chances are much greater that buyers will overlook their differences in opinion on flooring shades and design. Don't forget to clean your windows.

Although these suggestions might seem a bit of a headache, you'll be rewarded with a buyer sooner than others. You may even get a higher sale price than you expected. If you have trouble placing yourself into the shoes of buyers you've never met, consider asking your REALTOR for advice. Most REALTORS are well qualified to give you suggestions for decorating your home to sell.
